The Northman

The Northman ★★★★★

Epic is the easiest way to describe The Northman. Robert Egger’s 3rd movie, and also Robert Egger’s 3rd groundbreaking masterpiece, is nothing short of jaw-dropping. It’s a visceral, strange, entrancing movie that takes you on a journey. Just prepare to strap in tight, because this one doesn’t really stop for you to catch your breath.

Like The Lighthouse and The Witch before it, The Northman creates a captivating and immersible world. Every scene further draws you in, and by the end I was so invested in this tale that I forgot about everything around me. The setting drew me in, and I can almost feel the tension growing throughout the movie. Everything fires on all cylinders here to capture this.

The acting is phenomenal. Alexander Skarsgard had to have been the most perfect casting decision they could have made. He brings such a visceral intensity to the role between his physique to his natural intensity captured in the eyes. It brings the energy a movie like this needs. The supporting cast is also great, and memorable too. Dafoe was excellent, Anya Taylor Joy was magnificent, and Kidman and Ethan Hawke were great too in the time they gave them.

The direction and cinematography of the movie are amazing. The attention to detail in creating a breathing world is amazing. Like The Witch, it’s almost unbelievable how much attention to detail this movie can put in. It feels authentic and epic at every step of the way. The cinematography perfectly captures that world building and is a sight to behold. There are so many amazing shots in this movie, and its use of lighting is top flight.

Overall, The Northman is impressively amazing. For Egger’s, this makes 3 absolute masterpieces in 3 attempts. It’s hard to imagine how you wouldn’t argue he is one of the most naturally talented film-makers out there doing it. This is a must watch movie, and one that is best seen on the biggest screen you can.
