Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★★

Although slow in the middle, this film was so much more significant and so much more beautiful and heartbreaking than I expected. Sometimes it didn't quite know what to do with what it needed to do, but by the final act it was on a roll and had moved all the right pieces into place. At times it felt like the balance of reality/child-like-fantasy-perspective wasn't quite settled, but that final battle scene handled it well and created incredibly memorable visuals. Taika is definitely not just a funny director with a kiwi accent, and now that I think back to his other works he's incredibly underestimated for how visual and moving his films are.
