Gillian Kaney’s review published on Letterboxd:
Wow! Another incredible Jacob Tremblay performance. That kid is amazing!
Brie of course did a fantastic job too but I feel like Jacob should have won the Oscar.
This film is a difficult watch for sure. Some very uncomfortable and sickening moments. What a creep Old Nick is *shudders*.
I definitely preferred the first half but I was obviously happy with how it played out. The scene with the hair cut was lovely and also when he met the little dog 🥰
It kind of annoyed me how grandpa (Macy) acted though. Sure it's awkward but come on he's a kid! And a wonderful one at that. Hated that we didn't see a nicer resolution to that storyline thread.
Also would have been more satisfying to see that Old Nick bastard burn.
So overall, the amazing performances really make this film but it's maybe a bit too harrowing of a storyline to warrant lots of rewatches but I'm sure I will watch it again some day. I will have to definitely read the book now though because that's just how I roll. 🙃
P.s. loved seeing Rita (Amanda Brugel) from The Handmaids Tale pop up as another absolute sweetheart. ❤
