Shin Godzilla

Shin Godzilla ★★★★½

Another completely different take on Godzilla, Shin Godzilla focuses on the surrounding politics involved when an unknown giant creature shows up and completely decimates your city.

That may sound boring but it completely worked for me, it added a sense of realism and gave the repercussions some weight. The added historical context of Japan's bombings adds to the drama and feeling of despair.

Godzilla himself is utterly terrifying, this isn't your Grandmother's Godzilla, he is huge and spiny, covered in a nuclear glow with crooked horrifying teeth and nasty looking tail. The eyes however really threw me, I understand the idea behind them to be almost Fish-like as this is a subterranean creature that has had no need for eyelids, but the do look a bit silly and it's a bit jarring compared to the rest of the design.

The cliffhanger ending really has me wanting to know what they had planned for a follow up, it seems completely left feild and unique to the franchise and I really hope it happens one day soon.
