Paul Elliott’s review published on Letterboxd:
An absence of imagery and a shortage of storyline ambushes the senses in this experimental short from Peter Kubelka, and the soundtrack, which is little more than static, gratingly underpins the film as it flickers between periods of darkness and light. I naturally wouldn't dismiss Kubelka because at least he's experimenting with manipulating the barest elements of the cinematic medium. Still, I was thankful that Arnulf Rainer was only seven minutes long. To be fair, the prosperity of this experimental film is governed entirely by its exhibition, and on a big screen that's radiating the only source of light is invariably preferable to how I viewed it.
