Boyz n the Hood ★★★★½

John Singleton’s directorial debut Boyz n the Hood focuses on the life of a young man named Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.) coming-of-age in the mostly black neighbourhood of South Central Los Angeles. Singleton on no occasion avoids showing the harsh realities of Tre’s environment as well as creating an atmosphere of all-pervasive threats through numerous minor elements, like the sporadic sound of Los Angeles police department sirens. This movie was a remarkable commencement for Singleton’s career and also significantly marked the debut for Regina King as well as Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut.
