Melancholia

Melancholia ★★★★

Lars von Trier’s psychological Melancholia is the recipient of an impressive and increasingly unstable performance from Kirsten Dunst. The preliminary inspiration for the movie emerged during a therapy session von Trier attended during a depressive episode, and it’s reposeful on the ears and eyes due to its haunting score and tremendous cinematography which conveys the anxieties and contempt that von Trier holds for the world at large. It’s the second entry in his unofficially labelled Depression Trilogy, preceded by Antichrist and followed by Nymphomaniac, and is crystallised and controlled in its narrative.
