Scream ★★★★

This 1996 movie written by Kevin Williamson gave rise to a sequence of sequels but none of them as compelling as the first. Directed by Wes Craven, and inspired by the real-life case of an American serial killer who murdered five students in Florida over four days in late August 1990, it’s a movie which amalgamates the slasher thriller, which was popularised by John Carpenter’s Halloween in 1978, with macabre humour; the whole thing plays like a delicate balancing act between satire and appreciation, and it’s a movie which justifies the commercial success that it achieved.
