The Phantom Carriage

The Phantom Carriage ★★★★★

The Phantom Carriage is a deadly parable of irresistible temptation, and it solidified silent cinema fame for Swedish director-screenwriter-actor Victor Sjöström. It’s based on Nobel Prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf’s 1912 novel Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness! and primarily deals with principled misery and the achievability of transformation.

It conducts the spirit of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol while incontrovertibly serving as the inspirational launchpad for Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. Julius Jaenzon's cinematography holds an ageless disposition and the performances are closer to the modern era than to the typical silent-period emoting. This is a wonderful example of everything coming together universally to create a sensational and influential movie.
