The Shop Around the Corner

The Shop Around the Corner ★★★★★

Based on the 1937 Hungarian play Parfumerie by Miklós László, The Shop Around the Corner has a multitude of alluring aspects along with some delightful characters, as well as generating several further adaptations through the years, from 1949’s In the Good Old Summertime to 1998’s You've Got Mail. Produced and directed by Ernst Lubitsch, and despite it still retaining a little of its staginess, Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart, as Klara Novak and Alfred Kralik respectively, are both thoroughly entertaining in this romantic comedy which is one of the greatest of the genre.
