Paul Elliott’s review published on Letterboxd:
This Stan Brakhage experimental short accounts the arrival of Stan and Jane Brakhage's first child, Myrrena. Brakhage filmed the process principally to feel a part of the childbirth, which saw hospitals denying men any participation in those days. It features his usual fast-paced style of editing and balances between art-house and simple home movie aesthetics. He later filmed his third daughter's birth in a more non-representational manner in his 1961 short Thigh Line Lyre Triangular. Meshes of the Afternoon filmmaker Maya Deren became outraged at the film's New York premiere because she believed he was intruding on an untouched area of womanhood. While the footage includes some graphic details that saw the footage initially seized at the processing stage for being pornographic, it has since become preserved by the Academy Film Archive. It's ultimately a delightful document.
