Nightmare Alley

Nightmare Alley ★★★

Wanted to like the movie so much, because of how everyone raves about it and I'm still pumped for del Toro's version, I even read the book prior to this rewatch. And while the book is terrific, it didn't help with my enjoyment of this adaptation.

It feels like too much happens offscreen. Too much happens just because. I don't really get a grasp on Tyrone Power's Stanton. He's good in the role, but the character here is not interesting or compelling. His downward spiral is out of story necessity more than rooted in character. Twists and turns don't register as well because other characters also don't get sufficient screentime to be properly established.

There are a lot of interesting elements here, but I wish I'd been more engaged with all of it.
