While certainly no Nosferatu or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Phantom of the Opera is still a very well made and clearly influential early exemplar of the horror genre.
The cinematography is quite beautiful, complimented by wonderfully elegant costumes and sets, and of course the fantastic make-up effects of the Phantom himself. Lon Chaney absolutely nails the performance too.
My main complaints are not really with the execution of the film, but rather the Phantom of the Opera story itself.
A definite horror classic, and a must-see for any fan of film.
