grace o.’s review published on Letterboxd:
i wanna show this to every person i know. a love letter to the art of theater. andrew garfield fucking killed this performance. if i had any major criticisms, i think that if this adaptation focused less on Larson it would have been 10x better. not saying it was terrible, but musicals tend to tell the kind of stories where a privileged party doesn’t learn the consequences of their actions or privilege that they have until it’s too late, self sabotaging themselves and still expecting the audience to feel bad for them rather than the parties affected (even if they had no ill intent). i didn’t notice that before until i read a couple other reviews for this movie, and it finally clicked.
even still, the music was terrific and the homages to broadway actors in their little cameos was so fun. i enjoyed this a lot from a musical standpoint.
