A movie so wildly ambitious and strange, made by an auteur director with a game cast, and what looks like a real budget, that you want so desperately for it to work, and you don't want to beat it up when it doesn't. Maybe Carax should try making small and intimate movies for a while? I don't know.

On a related note, let me tell you about this conversation I overheard yesterday. It's been haunting me. A few guys were talking about movies, and one of them said he found SOUND OF METAL unbearably pretentious and up its own ass, and had to turn it off after thirty minutes. And I thought, my god, if you think *that* movie is pretentious, what would you think of ANNETTE? Or anything the least bit challenging? We're all doomed.
