As a Cantonese speaker, I am glad I was able to focus on the sublime acting by Maggie Cheung as Mrs. Chan and Tony Leung as Mr. Chow. The loneliness that is within these characters jumps out even though the film itself is quiet. When Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow are in the same room, I could feel the emotional bond developing right before my eyes especially with those stolen glances. However, I did not like some of the transitions used and the slow-motion; it almost brought me out of the film. That lessened the emotional punch I got from that film.
Feelings can creep up just like that.
