A surprisingly hallucinatory and bizarre experience ... almost movie magic but not quite. Also the real Frank Abagnale definitely made up all this shit.

Yet another clear example of Spielberg pretty much only doing movies about father figures. It's all about daddy for this guy (mommy in AI).

Yes, it is full of baffling "how did this get made" moments to laugh at. Yes, it has a vaguely leftist critique of the American security state. Yes, you get to see a Justin Timberlake music video but it's a Killers song playing.
But the movie never coheres into anything significant and it is in fact a mess. Revisionists seem to have gone crazy with this movie but I don't see it at all.

I’m in shock at how brutally terrible this was.

This movie felt like watching a hundred Geico commercials stitched together, or like scrolling the TikTok feed of a 12 year old for two and a half hours. It felt like witnessing the higher order mental faculties of human beings be destroyed in real time by the intellectual ethic of the internet, where constant decontextualization prevents you from ever staying with one idea long enough to deepen it.

    Whole thing feels…

Extremely boring. Didn’t do anything for me until the very last scene. This is probably a case of a film that only a scholar can appreciate, because you have to do the reading to know why it was so “revolutionary” when it came out.  By now it’s an obsolete film and means nothing to a person like me. I have to say, I have seen plenty of films older than this one that spoke to me directly and made me feel powerful emotions. But I felt absolutely nothing watching this one.
