Catch my full review on video! ❤️

A bit of very dumb fun with the odd lovesick footnote here and there. The movie I really want to see is only just touched on in the closing credits sequence where—spoilies—the gang finally chills out about the ghost stuff, and all get up to some whacky paranormal hijinks with their late/lamented pal, Nak.

Watch my full review on video! I love you!

    Notes:

    • Wow, we’re really getting a Pyramid Head shot two minutes into the movie?

    • Lol, the exposition.

    • I can think of so many good Silent Hill settings, it’s kinda disappointing that Revelation mostly just recycles ones from the games. A good Silent Hill locale is {type a} any reminder of the 20th century’s failed dreams of general economic prosperity (malls, amusement…

Somewhere between Powell/Pressburger and Dario Argento. Very pretty! Absolutely self-assured (a lovely thing in a work so deeply stylized). . . . I’d recommend Masque for looks alone, even if its story were totally bogus and unfun—which, and but hey, turns out it’s neither: That Eddie Al Poe sure spins a helluva yarn when he gets goin.

All this to say: Big Rec from lil Nora.

    Evil Dead

Part of Hooptober 7. Film 5/31.

    Thoughts:

    • Fede Alvarez nailed Raimi’s weird goop fetish so well I assumed they’d gotten Raimi to direct the remake himself. . . . Goop going on people’s faces, in their mouths, eyes . . . (Remember Drag Me to Hell?—horror equivalent of that Nickelodeon show where the kids get slimed . . .)

    • They really decided to rehash the ol’ tree rape scene, huh? . . . Rape just for the spookiness of it, unmotivated by themes . . . it was an irritation coming outta ’81. In 2013? C’mon fellas, you shoulda known better.

I feel like you can tell a lot about a horror movie from whether its score is based on Penderecki, Ligeti, or Schönberg. This is some hard Ligeti shit. A slow-simmering pot. Little bubbles, lotta steam. It almost boils over but you catch it in time to turn it down. Your macaroni is fine.

tfw yr gay and you just walk right up the wall onto the ceiling. . . .

Hard to know what to say about this one. It’s such a deeply troubling movie. I saw an allegory for the condition of the petit-bourgeoisie in it, but I always see whatever I’ve been reading about, and I’ve just been reading Simone Weil’s Oppression et liberté. I’ll revisit it sometime and I’ll see other things. Seems like it’s…
