Grey the Dot’s review published on Letterboxd:
If you are remaking a movie the one thing you should do is look at the original and ask yourself "what can be improved? What ideas did it have that can be expanded upon?" Since Suspiria (1977) is the perfect audio-visual stimuli of the century it didn't even try to tell a story so all Suspiria (2018) could improve upon is the story. Boy did it improve the story.
Despite having the same basic framework, Suspiria (the new one) is so ridiculously engaging thanks to its story, storytelling, and cinematography that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time through wanting to know what was going to happen next. The conclusion is frankly very underwhelming and just as confusing as the original but for entirely different reasons. Let me rephrase that, the conclusion is visually the best most engaging part of the movie but, storywise the conclusion is very unsatisfying. Spoilers for why it's unsatisfying. All the buildup leads to the plot twist that the witch covenant's monarch is actually false and she's actually a sucky witch and that's the reason why the covenant has been going to shit recently. This is revealed when it is revealed that the main character is actually one of the original witch mothers here to kill all the false witches and leave only the true faithful descendants alive. All this has no emotional impact and is just an excuse to have a fun gory red-drenched murderfest. Spoilers over. The murderfest is great but the thing is, Suspiria (2018) has been all about the story so much so that it has forgotten to be a horror movie and instead becomes this arthouse flick which is fine after all if you can't beat them at their own game beat them at a different game. This is why the murderfest is such a letdown despite being the best part of the movie, it says fuck story this is a horror movie which is again why it is a detriment to the story it was telling up to this point even if it is again the best part of the movie.
