Is there a better score to a Ghibli film than this one? (I mean, maybe, I still have a bunch to see. But damn the music is good!)

I love the amount of time this movie devotes to the seemingly mundane. Whether it’s the side-splitter pineapple scene or the extended sequence revolving around young girls getting their periods. (Can you imagine a major American studio including that in one of their features? Disney actually refused to release this film for…

The wife and I watched this tonight in celebration of Godzilla’s 64th anniversary.

This is the film that made me fall in love with the King of the Monsters, and it’s an excellent starting point for folks who are new to the character. It’s got one clawed foot in a more solemn arena (think: the original “Godzilla”) while also embracing the series’s more fanciful elements. Look no further than Mothra and her twin fairies.

Lots of a fun! A great ensemble cast with Everyman Tom Hanks playing a swell asshole. I could’ve done without the bookends, though the final one moved me (in a cheap sorta way).

Gotta say, I’m not too broken up about the Kremlin getting fuckin’ leveled in this.

A hell of a good time! Comes up just a bit short, relative to the next two in the franchise, because the humor is a little more forced and the pace isn’t quite as unrelenting.

Unlike anything I’ve seen, it’s “the moviest movie ever” as someone at my screening’s Q&A put it. One second, you’ll be laughing at two characters with hotdog fingers and the next you’ll be in tears over a family in turmoil. A masterclass in film editing, this is a whirlwind of genre, tone, emotion, and imagination.

Oh and that Q&A included Michelle fucking Yeoh. She and the entire cast - especially Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan (also at the Q&A) - are great.

A punishing yet beautiful film. It’s rare to find a soundscape that makes you feel claustrophobic, but this one does. And the performances - particularly from Ahmed, Cooke, and Raci - are wonderful.
