The Shop Around the Corner

The Shop Around the Corner ★★★★

Light, frothy, and delightful...except when it isn’t. Lubitsch uses quiet to great dramatic effect. He allows for some wonderful silences between his actors, especially Sullivan and Stewart. It’s interesting to me how Stewart became the “aw shucks” everyman. That’s certainly there in most of his signature roles, but he often also exhibits roiling anger. And that’s the case in this film.
