lonergan is one of the all-time greats. a god at creating multi-faceted, complex people who struggle to deal with their own complexities. it feels so fulfilling to watch, and relate, emphasise, understand. j. smith cameron exceptionally good.

Nope 2022
gets twisted in so many knots over its own ideas and self-referential subtext, to the extent that it's quite hard to care or invest in the final (still amazing) culmination. which is a real shame because there's lots to love otherwise! there's a great film in here where everything is dialed back. kaluuya is brilliant as always, but the writing feels a bit laboured in both the comedy and serious bits for everyone.

Licorice Pizza 2021
loved it. on a surface level it's a wild and fun ride that is impossibly enjoyable, but there's so much depth and richness to it. the relationship is so clever and complex. it's entirely transactional but it is "whatever you want it to be", and it serves to imbue their own identities. the uncomfortable age gap aids that too, and i think it's really interesting. it's such an evocative film. an amazingly built sunny world with loads of running and silliness and feeling lost and the facade of adulthood. brilliant.
