A seriously underrated comedy-mystery-noir, putting together some of my favorite genres: detective noir, 70s retro, and Ryan Gosling.
Who, by the way, is fucking hilarious. His comedic timing and physical humor is insanely good. His skills, just like this movie, are really slept on. I mean, that scene when he sees Sid’s body actually might’ve killed me. His chemistry with Angourie Rice is also brilliant. The plot is funny, twisty, and engaging. It’s paced very well, there’s rarely a time to take a breath, and you really never know what’s going to happen.
The #1 reason this takes 5 stars though, is that even after my 4th, or 5th viewing, I’m still dying at the jokes. Few movies/comedies do that, credit to Black and the cast.
