Drugstore Cowboy 1989
wish this had even one singular thought that van sant follows through on. otherwise it’s well shot and even quite emotional and funny, has a real bad case of screenwriter brain tho.

Chelsea Girls 1966
the most honest film, both in terms of aesthetic honesty and ideological honesty. part of this, i believe, is how early this film feels, completely enraptured in perversions by lumiere, dickson, edison, porter, griffith… the way the images consistently reinvent themselves (long static to ever-pulsating gyrations, gyrations to slow moving sterile pans, pans to long static) it is as if they are discovering cinema all on their own. warhol’s films are the fingers of a child, constantly probing the textures, colors, shapes of this new machine and finally discovering a new, incredibly personal way of synthesizing them.

Picnic on the Grass 1959
how terribly uninteresting the theories of scientists are when the natural world whispers everything we must know! renoir’s simplest and most pleasurable anarchic statement.
