First Man 2018
I loved this more than I thought I would. This is not anywhere close to a masterpiece but it is still a really good film, even great at times. The main reasons are the excellence of Chazelle's direction (although not perfect), the gorgeous cinematography (!!!) and incredible performances by Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. The biggest thing letting this down is the script: it needed serious rewrites or a completely different screenwriter - not to mention that some of the dialogue is so inaudible its annoying. There is sooo much shaky cam it makes no sense at times and at least 20 minutes could have been cut. However what really brings this all together is the magical score. I don't know how Justin Hurwitz does it but wow. The actual moon landing is just stunning, magical and intense. I really loved seeing the behind the scenes of how it all worked and how it affected Neil and his family. That was more interesting than I thought it would be. Some scenes are honestly breathtaking whilst other scenes feel bland and meandering. This could have been truly brilliant but it is still really good!
