Whereas THE FORCE AWAKENS left Rian Johnson room to take the third Star Wars trilogy in any direction, Johnson did no such favor with THE LAST JEDI. While a fantastic movie in its own right, his definitive choices are as much to blame for THE RISE OF SKYWALKER's failures as the loss of Carrie Fisher.
In the past I've faulted TLJ for feeling less than cohesive, but I had no such complaints this time. Even the bit on Canto Bight worked better, though I could still do without 50% of it.
No matter how you feel about THE LAST JEDI, it's hard to deny that at its best, it created a blueprint for what Star Wars could be in the future... just not the immediate future. +1/2
