Harry Swanson’s review published on Letterboxd:
I feel like I just saw color for the first time.
I am so glad that I’ve already seen some Kurosawa films, because this would not have the same effect otherwise. Seeing how masterfully he uses black and white in his earlier films, then watching him use color to its extremities is jarring, but absolutely gorgeous.
You can show gore, maybe some mutilation, you can do a Mortal Kombat fatality for all I care, but none of that is quite as shocking as some fiery red blood, as shown in the final scene.
Kurosawa is the only person who already has so much hype, and still surpasses expectations.
