Paths of Glory

Paths of Glory ★★★★½

“Gentlemen of the court, there are times that I'm ashamed to be a member of the human race and this is one such occasion.”

The Good:
Paths of Glory is no doubt a frustrating watch, but that’s entirely the intentional. The way Stanley Kubrick wrote Paths of Glory is riveting. The themes are rich and relevant.

As with every Stanley Kubrick film to date the direction is absolutely stellar. The meticulous camerawork is as always, admirable.

Almost every performance is absolutely phenomenal but wow, Kirk Douglas completely stands out. I’m very glad this was the first film I’ve seen him in.

Paths of Glory is an absolutely great looking film. The cinematography and lighting is very dynamic and overall just a visual treat.

The Bad:
There are some very iffy performances that drag down every scene they are in with their overacting. I also have multiple nitpicks regarding sound design and sound editing. Mostly during the battlefield sequences.

Fun Fact:
Winston Churchill said that the film was a highly accurate depiction of trench warfare and the sometimes misguided workings of the military mind.
