Helen’s review published on Letterboxd:
In the ultimate twist, Tobe Hooper parodies his own film and opens this with a bopping New Wave soundtrack and two high school seniors on their way to a football game.. leaving you totally unprepared for the grimy madness you’re about to witness.
While there is no doubt that this has the same sweaty, claustrophobic, frantic atmosphere of the first (this time in a bloody, neon nightmare of caverns underneath an abandoned carnival) there is also a layer of cheeky, kitschy, glorious fun glossed over the debauchery.
ie: Dennis Hopper testing out chainsaws at the local ‘Cut-Rite Chain Saw” supply store and Drayton Sawyer winning a chili contest while adorned in pastels and plaid. Even Leatherface is raunchy and kooky in this one!
Oh, and of course, Chop-Top.
“Lick my plate, you dog dick!”
It’s aggressively camp in the best way.
