Tonal whiplash, to say the least. In trying to be both a dark comedy and an important message movie about a serious subject matter, Promising Young Woman fails at both. Carrie Mulligan is giving as good a performance as she possibly can given that her character has essentially zero going on outside of her trauma, and the rest of the douchy dudebro caricatures that fill out most of the supporting cast are spot on, but the bubblegum pop world they seem to inhabit really nullified whatever message the film was ultimately supposed to have, and having it be the police, of all institutions, that save the day here rings demonstrably false to anyone who is or knows a survivor.
