Lee W 💫HEAVEN SURROUNDS US LIKE A HOOD 💫’s review published on Letterboxd:
There’s a cut here that’s so violent I felt my heart stop. No one working in Hollywood genre cinema operates on the same level of emotional intelligence as Shymalan. Images so overwhelming, so disarming, there’s barely any time to process as your heart shakes at the terror of what’s unfolding. Just as the characters are unable to catch up with whats happening; a 50-year old body with the mind of a 5-year old. Characters literally blocked off from each other on-screen, as they can only wait until the inevitable. Institutions weaponising the body against itself, the body as a violent site of decay. There’s no wonder this has such an effect on me, my worst fears unfolding before me and I just want to make it stop. But Shyamalan knows that would be too much. He has to have a happy ending; he knows, like in Glass, these systems will fall. It’s only a matter of time.
