Chie the Brat 1981
Overlong and Takahata would go on to take a lot of what’s here into multiple projects that are more concise and also of heart-stopping beauty, but Chie The Brat is so likeable and charming, and contains frequent moments of pure warmth and lyrical grace it should not be slept on. Horus: Prince of the Sun 1968
Of course the first film from both Takahata and Miyazaki would be ahead of its time and carry plenty of socialist subtext. Very basic most of the time in form, but towards the end makes way for excellent montage. The seeds of greatness for both masters were firmly planted from the start
