Midsommar ★★½

People really like this, eh? And it looks pretty and, at least at the start, is intriguing and suspensful as the weirdness slowly cranks up. But when it ends, I felt...nothing. The characters were blanks to me: I didn't care about them at all. Any of them. And the whole thing seemed like a long-winded way to explain how Florence Pugh needed to jettison her shit boyfriend and his shitter friends.

The film made me laugh a fair bit: for the first hour especially. I liked that it wasn't taking itself too seriously but perhaps it needed to have a firmer grip on what it was trying to say. Because the edgy laughs and the virtuousity of the direction only took it so far. By the end, I just found it a total bore and was pretty sick of the sight of everyone on screen.
