Daisy Edgar-Jones does a lot of heavy lifting to get this one over the finish line. I got whiffs of Eve's Bayou and Fried Green Tomatoes off of this but it's not nearly as good as those two fine films. It isn't awful...I didn't hate it but I'm guessing it owes mightily to the source material and I'm also guessing I wouldn't be the biggest fan of that. But it looks good and I do enjoy this kind of movie where a lingering mystery unfolds over the course of the runtime leading up to a shocking reveal that in this case became painfully obvious.

Ok...this was pretty good. A bit fantastical and melancholic....hits a lot of emotional buttons. I have a visceral reaction to heavy-handed depictions of bullies in films and this definitely triggerred that. But it also got me up in my feels about the special friendship between the titular characters. It's quirky, it's funny...it's just an overall sweet movie. I just hope that Charles doesn't go to Philly...they will kill him. They will kill him dead.

If you had told me this morning that I'd be closing out my movie viewing evening with a version of the classic Cinderella story that involved surprisingly catchy musical numbers, copious amounts of nudity, lots of simulated sex, a borderline racially insensitive and homophobic version of the fairy godmother, a ballroom orgy, and a magical vagina, I would've said "Yeah. Sounds about right." If that sounds like something, you might enjoy...well, I won't tell anyone.
