Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 ★★★★★

I think that what this movie does that works so well for me over other superhero movies is that it exemplifies what it is about superheroes that makes them so popular. It’s cool to watch a super powerful person fight a bunch of people but the emotional resonance of a community protecting each other is so powerful. That’s what I love so much about Spider-Man. He’s not god-like being protecting the entire Galaxy from big space monsters. He’s just your neighbor looking out for you.

Much like the bridge scene from the first one, with its “you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!” moment, the train scene shows this idea of community and social responsibility so well. Peter saves a train full of people and in return they protect his privacy and try to defend him from evil. That’s what hits home for so many Spider-Man fans and why so many are from marginalized groups. We learn to stand up for each other and form a barrier of protection against those who want to harm us. Spider-Man is just a heightened version of that idea. This version of his story is a masterpiece.
