M. Night Shyamalan’s best since The Village. It’s very entertaining, but has some imperfect writing, especially in regards to mental health and queerness. But what works best is the pacing, this shit starts moving instantly and a lot of that is due to Dave Bautista’s and Kristen Cui’s performances, as well as the characterization of just about everyone. I really questioned where this was going and very audibly reacted to parts of this. Not his best work, but his best in a long time and a fun time at the theater.

Joyland 2022
Sundance Virtual 2023 #4
At the center of Joyland is a romance that serves as a narrative lens that is more reflective of the film’s greater theme of being confined to gender roles and expectations and how we are ultimately harmed being confined by them. Haider and Biba’s romance is one of the most beautiful I have seen in recent cinema, and the characterization of Biba and Haider makes it all the greater. Empire of Light 2022
Empire of Light balances trying to be a love-letter to cinema, being a film about race relations in the United Kingdom, and being a character study about Olivia Colman’s character and never really succeeds at any of it. I like the performances, particularly Colman’s, but nothing really stands out. There is far too much going on for me to latch onto any of it and it feels like I am missing chunks of character development.

Hiruko the Goblin 1991
Tsukamoto loses some flair with the expanded budget, and really, expanded plot of Hiruko The Goblin. All throughout this, I found myself really struggling with the connecting to these characters or the narrative, but really enjoyed his use of special effects, his use of horror, and the shockingly lighthearted nature of the film.

Meet Cute 2022
People are giving this way too much credit, this was awful. Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson are two actors I really defend and each have been on a really poor television show that was not representative of their talent, but this was rough. The concept is never fully utilized, they have zero chemistry, and worse, this develops into the worst co-dependent relationship and has really weird moral lessons, like your trauma makes you who you are so you need your…
