Horror will always be my favorite genre.

But nowadays it seems like the genre is taken for granted, and that more of the films are rushed, cheap and more or less made for money alone, often lacking any sort of artistic intent. The original ideas are few and far between, and the mainstream market seems to consist of nothing but sequels and remakes.

Isn't it ironic then, how the most original horror film of the year happens to be a remake? Well, a re-imagining at least. Based on one of the most classic Italian horror films of all time, this version manages to keep the essence of the original, while still doing something completely new.

In terms of style, editing and cinematography, this film goes left-field in almost every way, and really doesn't care about conventions. The script is rich and layered, full of metaphors that I surely can't decipher after just one watch. The film demands to be studied, and I for one can't wait to watch it again.

Thom Yorke is a treasure, and this soundtrack will be played frequently.

Despite my initial response, it seems like horror films are alive and well. We need more of this. The kino is real.
