Another casualty of Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox, "The Empty Man" is one hell of a debut for writer/director David Prior. Imagine a dashed off Wes Craven script handled with the same grim and portentous tone as "True Detective" Season One or Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners," and a survival-horror game's slow drip of cryptic clues and foreboding locations. The pre-deterministic ending lands with a total thud, especially after it takes 137 minutes to get there, but for me horror is all about atmosphere and "The Empty Man" has Vibe for days.
