Ok, this movie deserves a higher rating, I am just very mad at it.
First the political messages in Get Out and Us are muddled and dime store.
However Get Out was a fantastic horror movie, one of the scariest things to me is to be a passenger in my own body, it's one of the major reason I am straight edge. I thought the movie was a terrifying thriller.
So when the trailer for Us dropped I was psyched. This looked so good, I wished I could have seen it in theaters.
So I finally got around to it without any spoilers and for the first 2/3rds of the movie I was into it. It was thrilling, intense and white knuckle.
Then the last act hit and the whole damned thing fell apart. The hands across america thing was a lame joke that looked stupid. The actions of the tethered made no sense, sometimes they mimic their counterparts and sometimes they don't. Why? Who cares‽ Me
Their origin was explained just enough to be stupid. And when the final twist hit me and my wife called it long before. I hoped Peele didn't go to such a hack place. But he did because horror movies have twists I guess?
The movie started so personal and interesting, but then it got post-apocalyptic and the scale became unmanageable even if we dud just focus on Addy and Red.
Also are there just millions of these tethered facilities in the world? Could Red have gotten them all. Are there enough in the one building to cross America like that?
WHO CARES‽ I have to make a statement about immigrants or some shit. Get Out never gave up the plot for the statement. This one does.
One good thing I can say is the actors brought their A+ game. They hit it right out of the park, especally considering what they were asked to do. Lupita Nyong'o is a beast.
When Addy was in the basement all the wind was knocked out of my sails. So while I liked this movie more than 2.5 I was so mad at the end I give it this rating out of dissapointment.
Watch Get Out instead. It was by far the better film. Lets see if Peele can do it again or if he is a flash in the pan.
