Vox Lux

Vox Lux ★★½

Not buying this as some lofty "Twenty-First Century Portrait" but it is the only movie I've seen that dramatizes a mass shooting (something I still don't think should be exploited on screen but nonetheless) and actually attempts to untangle the odd, perverse relationship between personal and larger national trauma in the fallout of these constant tragedies, so props for that. Unfortunate then that it had to try to shoehorn that into some broader thread about the danger and vapidity of celebrity and pop stardom, reaching for a profundity that isn't really there and failing to take a clear stance on the complicity of its main character and by extension how we're supposed to feel about her chart-topping hits.
