Annette ★★★½

I must admit that I didn't expect to love "Annette" so much as its passionate lovers. Over the past decade, musicals have transformed into an off-key genre that's lost its sound of music in greasy declines. That being said, "Annette" is a melodic exception that brings the genre back to life in all its glory. An ambitious, thought-provoking and whimsical musical, it proves the genre hasn't yet lost its sparkling melodies. French filmmaker Leos Carax exhibits strong control over color palettes, musical sequences and live-singing, using these elements to craft ear-pleasing experience. At the center of it all are Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, who make a dazzling match-made-in-heaven duet. That being said, the film is unevenly paced, and lacks character development. Nonetheless, it's worth seeing on Prime. Here's why:
