Sunset Boulevard ★★★★½

love how this pulpy, noirish, ‘fictional’ film about screenwriting and making film is also a film set in the ‘real’ world: set at the studio of the production company and distributor, Paramount, Cecil B DeMille appearing as himself, cross-gender performance as Chaplin’s Tramp, with references throughout MGM, Fox etc.

and of course this intertextuality extends into the films of David Lynch - both with ‘Mulholland Dr.’ and Gordon Cole (himself) in ‘Twin Peaks’

would make a good double bill with ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?’
