Upgrade

Upgrade ★★★

Basically Venom, which was coincidentally released in the same year, yet better. Also unfortunately not including Tom Hardy. 😪

Leigh Whannell, presumably best known for directing last year's The Invisible Man which I have yet to see along with many horror screenwriting credits, Whannell directed Upgrade in 2018 which is one of the most popular and experimental indie superhero films from recent times. It uses its low-budget to great effects and while it can easily be seen that the budget didn't help the futuristic setting, things still managed to work out. Upgrade is also sadly but probably expectedly painfully cheesy, generic, predictable, and repetitive. The writing is incredibly subpar and the story isn't anything new at all yet if I'm being honest, it's a really fun time where the crew didn't take the film too seriously, the performances were surprisingly quite good, the ending was great, and I'm glad they weren't scared to show some violence and play around with the cinematography and frame rate so it is what it is 🤷‍♂️
