Before Midnight

Before Midnight ★★★★

I suppose my expectations were low because this surpassed them in myriad ways. My disappointment in the washed-out digital palette gave way to a kind of wonderment at how effectively it conveys the sense of fading that characterizes the film's main relationship. On the whole it's a film that examines love against the backdrop of mortality, which can lead one to confront and deny all sorts of assumptions you make when you are able to keep thoughts of death at bay. The film manages to have an ambiguous ending that could be read positively or negatively, but it leaves you feeling that there are ways two people who care deeply for one another can, or must, forge ahead even in the face of hopelessness. Maybe it's a "closet Christian" thing.
