Scream ★★★★★

”Watch a few movies. Take a few notes. It was fun!”

One of my favourite movies of all time. It introduced me to the idea of meta-narratives within, and about, films.

I was about 8 or 9 when I saw it for the first time. It initially scared me, but overtime it turned into a weird core text for me and my friends; we quote it all the time.

In many ways Scream opened up the world of movies for me. The dialogue made the horror genre seem like a vast taxonomy that could be seen and understood.

I unconsciously used all the movie references within Scream as my first horror movie watchlist—devouring all of them in the hope it would help me better understand the film.

Those are just my personal associations with the movie. I didn’t even mention the cultural impact it had, or how it resuscitated the horror genre.

It’s a masterpiece of mainstream filmmaking.
