Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ★★★★½

One of the few films my mum will ever go see in the cinema. She text me after - 'it was sad.' She lost her dad over seven years ago now but never a day goes by without her thinking of him. The weight of Here We Go Again's My Love, My Life number outdid everything else, all the joy.

It's enough to scoff at caveats and preambles. 'It's not usually my kind of thing, but...' Here We Go Again's foundations are built on parent/child relationships, often the strongest relationship a person will ever feel. It's not subtle about it (they literally make a song and dance about it) but that doesn't mean it's not hard-hitting. The loss of a parent hangs over the film, as does the love of one.

Snobbery (or worse) over its delivery only excludes the critic. Everyone else is revelling in the best songs ever written (not hyperbole), a wish-fulfilment plot about running away from home to live your life somewhere better, and a cast of characters, immediately likeable, dispensing with pleasantries and unashamedly motivating themselves with love. Whether that's the love of adventure, of romance, or of lost loves we will never get back, Here We Go Again is a genuine and emotional tale with a soundtrack that will never be topped.
