If you’re a white director making a movie about racism, including your own naïve racism toward a friend, the least you could do is give that friend the chance to tell his story and for the love of god, LIGHT HIM PROPERLY IN THE FILM. Johnny is hardly in this movie after about the halfway point until the very end and any scene of him and Paul in the dark, you literally cannot see Johnny because he isn’t lit properly. It’s a well-intentioned film trying to make a point, but it merely scratches the surface and ends up not saying anything.
SXSW 2022 starting out strong with this one! The Daniels have delivered on another amazing, creative, and inventive film. Uproariously funny and a wild ride from start finish. Michelle Yeoh and newcomer Stephanie Hsu together form an unstoppable force. And Ke Huy Quan (who you may recognize as Short around from the Temple of Doom) brings a subtle force of positivity and joy to the film as well.
