    Daisies

    ★★½

Daisies is a film I’ve wanted to watch since I found out it existed, the beautiful cinematography and incredibly stylish editing choices made it seem really appealing to my taste. Unfortunately, I found it hard to connect to anything on screen.

Daisies just reminded me of an annoyingly obnoxious attention grabbing child, doing anything to be ‘different’.

And the main characters? Will Ferrell levels of terrible and obnoxious. Does this type of character become better solely because it’s an arthouse film?

    No.

    But it was quirky tho.

A simple but effective story that everyone should see.

Being someone who loves this era of filmmaking it’s always fresh to see it done from the black perspective. Ousmane Sembène, being the first African director, crafted a personal drama effectively reflecting on the time it was set.

If it were just a little longer this could have easily become a favourite.

Another relentless masterpiece by Béla Tarr in which  poetry is created through tedium.

Just like Tarkovsky before him, Tarr is a master at sculpting time. A runtime of two and a half hours while only using 30 shots and not a moment is wasted.

Some people seem to believe that the overly tedious structure is too much, that Tarr became to pretentious for his own good and the film is a depressing drag. Good. That’s what he wanted you to…
