Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

a miracle that this exists in this era of blockbuster filmmaking and that too coming from a popular franchise like star wars. repurposes it's predecessor with everything it did wrong. The Force Awakens relied on nostalgia to interest us in the narrative, this on the other hand suggests we let the past die (there are some callbacks to Empire to be found here but this still remains a unique vision).

it's a movie not too keen on the past (like i mentioned before) — completely discards the familial issue with rey's parents, it does not matter where you come from, that's the past. appropriate how the lightsaber (representing the past), the mythic tool of the franchise is destroyed, although not completely because you can't get rid of the past, you have to learn to live with it, repurpose it. so incredibly potent and cathartic.
