  There’s a curious immigration narrative bubbling under this film about identity and family. This idea of “belonging” to a country that does not necessarily make it easy for you to thrive (even though Deryan eventually does). Peter is immediately welcomed into the family, while Azah is chastised over “differences of values”. 

  Family is family of course, but what does it actually mean to be part of anything?

  It’s obvious the movie wants to alienate the audience from Erika, it wants them to gape in awe at her self mutilation, her perversion, her callousness. When she reveals her letter, and her true intentions, it seems as if the movie is begging the audience for their surface level disgust.
